History

The Graduate Program in Language Studies – PROGEL was approved by Resolution No. 249/2017/CEPE/UFRPE and officially established through Resolution No. 073/2019/CONSU/UFRPE (attached), following a recommendation from the Technical-Scientific Council (CTC) - CAPES in August 2019.
The program was recommended with a rating of 3 in its first CAPES Quadrennial Evaluation (2017-2020).
PROGEL's teaching, research, and extension activities take place at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco - UFRPE, located in Dois Irmãos, Recife-PE, as the program operates in-person.
PROGEL is the first stricto sensu graduate program in Linguistics and Literature at UFRPE, standing out in Pernambuco as a pioneer in the Interdisciplinary Language Studies concentration, especially within the public federal universities of the state.

CAPES Rating and Scholarships

The program was recommended by CAPES in June 2019 and underwent its first quadrennial evaluation (2017-2020), receiving a rating of 3 from CAPES.
Currently, the program receives CAPES scholarships, alongside securing additional funding through grant calls from research agencies (CNPq and FACEPE).

Program Objectives

Based on its Mission, PROGEL outlines the following strategic objectives:

General Objective

To train researchers, professors, technicians, students, and other professionals (writers, editors, linguistic consultants, screenwriters, etc.) interested in discussions and research in Language Studies, always guided by the interdisciplinary knowledge relevant to the Program’s Concentration Area.
This is in response to the need to enhance the qualifications of graduates in Letters and related fields for the educational, cultural, and social development of the Northeast region.

Specific Objectives

  1. To study various forms of knowledge related to different applied disciplines within Language Studies.

  2. To contribute to the training and qualification of human resources in Language Studies, aligned with the public and private sector demands, and in accordance with the Graduate Education Policies (PDI UFRPE 2021-2030).

  3. To train professionals for teaching, research, and diverse roles within Language Studies, guided by theoretical and methodological approaches according to the program’s Research Lines.

  4. To promote the creation and consolidation of innovative research groups, exploring connections between Language Studies and other disciplines.

  5. To deepen academic knowledge and provide opportunities for master’s students to develop their skills in research conceptualization and execution within the Interdisciplinary Language Studies field.

  6. To enhance PROGEL’s visibility and UFRPE’s national and international reputation by supporting recognized intellectual production from faculty and students in postgraduate research.

  7. To encourage interdisciplinary work, strengthening the program’s development and fostering dialogue with related fields, primarily in Language Studies.

  8. To contribute to inclusion and accessibility by supporting students and research themes associated with affirmative actions, equity, diversity, and democracy.

  9. To encourage the development of projects and initiatives that facilitate knowledge transfer and/or technology dissemination to specific social sectors within the framework of PROGEL.
